STATEHOOD DAY MESSAGE OF HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR OF NAGALAND NIKHIL KUMAR

Following is the full text of the Statehood Day message of His Excellency the Governor of Nagaland, Nikhil Kumar:
            Namaskar,
‘On this day, as we celebrate the 47th anniversary of our Statehood, as our state of Nagaland was started on 1st December 1963 as the 16th state of the Indian Union, I have great pleasure in addressing you my dear brothers, sisters, young men and women, dear boys and girls of our beautiful state to offer you my greetings and my best wishes. I also pay my tribute to the founding fathers of our state for their vision, foresight and concern for the well being of our people that had led to the founding of our state. I am aware that there are areas in which our state is deficient, but I also know that these 47 years have been very fruitful since there have been commendable achievements in its governance and development.
Our state has been making steady progress in the social sector, education and health care particularly primary health thanks to our communitisation initiatives and the implementation of central government schemes particularly, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, the PMGSY and the National Rural Health Mission. The state government has been organising Road Shows in different districts as a ‘Government-Public, Interface’ to educate people about our rich culture tradition and development activities. While it has achieved success in this the Road Shows have also enabled our Administrators to get acquainted with the dynamism and potential of our people at the grass roots.
Friends, people elsewhere have improved their living standards by achieving a high level of literacy, by cultivating cash crops, by exploring employment opportunities within the country and abroad and by promoting tourism. We need to do the same. I am sure, by organising a mega event like the Hornbill Festival, which will be held from tomorrow, and aided by the new slogan of our Tourism Department ‘Nagaland-The Land of Festivals’ we should be able to attract more tourists to the state. We need to open ourselves up so as to let others know of our potential and our assets for only then can we hope to invite investments. It is through investments that we can hope to achieve development and progress and, as you know, we aspire for our state to be amongst the most developed and progressive states. A big responsibility rests on our younger generation for they are our future which is why we place emphasis on the empowerment of our young boys and girls. We organize their training in market-oriented skills which, we hope, will help them in exploiting employment opportunities. I have seen many young boys and girls doing extremely well in other cities and especially in Delhi. I am confident that with your inherent talent and rich cultural heritage you will be able to exploit the opportunities that will come your way and continue our success story. I would urge you specially to exploit the enormous scope offered by the advancements in Information Technology. We need to open up our state to opportunities through interaction with people for it is through such initiatives that we can hope to achieve the type of development and progress that we need and aspire for.
If we have not been able to do so to the extend that we need, it is because of the disturbed conditions in our state. But, despite sporadic instances of lawlessness such as of extortion and abduction for ransom, I am happy to say that, thanks to the ceasefire that has been in force for the last thirteen years, there has been peace in our state. The state government, the Forum for Naga Reconciliation, Naga Hoho, NGOs and the Security Forces have made and are making commendable efforts to help enforce law and order and have been generally successful. Of these, the initiative taken by the FNR deserves special commendation. Also worth special mention is decision of the central government of India to engaging in talks to resolve the Naga Political issue and, with the blessings of the Lord Almighty, we should be able to bring about stable peace in our beautiful state. I have said this before and I say it now. It is only when there is stable peace in the state that we can achieve development and progress and fulfill the aspirations of not only millions of our brothers and sisters but also of our founding fathers. Amen! Jai Hind
