11th ANNUAL ARCHIVES WEEK

            The Department of Art & Culture is observing the 11th Annual Archives Week celebration 2010 at the Heritage Village, Kisama from 1st to 7th December 2010.
            The State Archives has been established as a Branch under the Directorate of Art & Culture, Kohima, Nagaland with a view to preserve the State records. The Archives is the only repository of the records in the State where the scholars are the users and valued beneficiaries.
            To create awareness and importance of archival treasures the exhibition has been put up to draw attention on the importance of archives as the nation’s documentary heritage, and to stress the role of archival institutions in restructuring future developments. The documents displayed in the exhibition have been chosen from the official records and the private papers.
            Public records on display include ‘Lieutenant Vincent diary of the expedition to the Angami Naga’ (1849) to the ‘Tour Diary of Mr. S.J. Duncan, Deputy Commissioner Naga Hills’ (1949). Private papers are also on display including ‘Life history of Rev. Edward W. Clark DD’ (1830) to ‘Thesis written by B.J. Anderson relating to the Baptist Churches in Assam/Nagaland’ (1936-1948). There are also a number of rare books on display some of which include ‘Anglo Assamese Relations by S.K. Bhuyan (1771-1862). A Gazetteer of the Territories under the Government of the East India Company, by Edward Thornton (1856), The Journal of the royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland Volume 6, 7, 8 (1872-76), Eastern Bengal and Assam by Superintendent of Government Printing Calcutta (1909) etc. 18 maps of various Naga hills areas ranging from 1922 to 1960 are also on display.

Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland. The department has, on the other hand, suggested consuming the edible winged creatures by the population at large as a first towards biological pest management and getting rid of the grasshopper.“Many insects are consumed as delicacy in different parts of the world. They have rich nutrient value such as protein, fats minerals and vitamins,” stated a press release issued by Director of Agriculture. The department said the commonly edible insects include grasshoppers, crickets, grubs, caterpillar beetles, winged termites, wasps and bee larvae, ants, cicadas, stink bugs and aquatic insects. IMPHAL, Jun 5: The World Environment Day was observed extensively in the state by various organizations and political parties in separate ways on their own respective themes with an objective to restore a balanced ecosystem in the state.
