HORNBILL FESTIVAL 2010 TO BE MORE TOURIST ORIENTED : HIMATO

            Hornbill Festival 2010 will be slightly different from the previous years. The festival will be more people and tourist oriented, Commissioner & Secretary Tourism, Himato Zhimomi IFS said this while speaking with media persons at a press conference on 30th November 2010 at the Directorate of Tourism, Kohima.
                He said that as per feedbacks received from previous hornbill launching programmes this year there will be less of talking and more of cultural activities. In this regard the Commissioner & Secretary said that the Governor of Nagaland will be the Chief Host at the inaugural function, where he will be received by about 1000 Kigwema villagers in their traditional attires from the parking and escort him to the main arena. The Tribal Guest, Buwang Konyak, Angh of Hongphoi village, Mon will invoke the Hornbill Festival in the Naga traditional way. All this has been arranged in order to add more of Naga flavour in order to showcase Naga culture and traditions right from the beginning.
            He also said that the festival is a platform for all Naga talents because a lot of other activities will be organised during the festival. In order to promote adventure tourism para gliding is also being introduce for the first time during the Hornbill Festival. In order to cater as many interest as possible and to promote Naga tourism the Naga King Chilli eating competition is being organised along with various indigenous games and sports.
            A charity ball is being organised, which is going to be an annual event, where the proceedings will go to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. The amount generated by this year ball will proceed to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the Leh flood victim. He also mentioned that the WW II rally is being organised to remember and honour the heroes who have fallen at the battle of Kohima and also to promote the WW II museum at Kisama and the Hornbill Festival. Himato also welcomed all tourists who have come to Nagaland to attend the Hornbill Festival.

Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland. The department has, on the other hand, suggested consuming the edible winged creatures by the population at large as a first towards biological pest management and getting rid of the grasshopper.“Many insects are consumed as delicacy in different parts of the world. They have rich nutrient value such as protein, fats minerals and vitamins,” stated a press release issued by Director of Agriculture. The department said the commonly edible insects include grasshoppers, crickets, grubs, caterpillar beetles, winged termites, wasps and bee larvae, ants, cicadas, stink bugs and aquatic insects. Sazo challenges students to liberate backward tag
