SDO killing condemned by many with call for calm

IMPHAL, Feb 17: The inhuman killing of Dr. Th Kishan, SDO, Kasom Khullen, Y Token, mandal of the revenue department and A Rajen, driver of the SDO has drawn strong condemnations from many organisations in the state as well as outside the state.A joint meeting of the UPF, NIPCO, TIPS, HERICOUN, MAPI COUNCIL and DESAM held today at the office of the HERICOUN strongly condemned the incident and said that the apex organisations believe the crime was committed by the culprits in collusion with the DC Ukhrul.It asked the DC Ukhrul, state government and Central government to take whole responsibility for the incident and at the same time appealed for the release of the other three staffs of the SDO.The Tangkhul People’s Organisation, Imphal (TPOI) also condemned the brutal killings and shared the sorrow and pain of the victims’ family.The TPOI also appealed to all communities to maintain calm and asked them to restrain from creating any untoward incidents anymore. It also appealed to all concerned to release the other three persons.The Kasom Khullen Sub-Division Development Association while condemning the brutal and barbaric murder expressed their feeling of sorrow for the bereaved and their families.The association and people of the said areas demanded the concerned authority book the culprits and take stern action immediately while also demanding the release of the other three staffs.The Phungyar Block Congress Committee also condemned the brutal murder and expressed their grief and condolences to the family members of the deceased and urged all citizens to maintain calm.The editorial members of the Alternative Perspectives expressed their deep shock and condolence on the sad demise of Dr. Thingam Kishan Singh, former editor of the journal, until he joined the MCS.Members of the journal shared the grief and pain of the deceased family members and said that Dr. Kishan was a prolific writer, an academician and an astute visionary. Majority of his writings reflected love for an egalitarian society and social harmony, it said.A collective condolence from Revolutionary Democratic Front, Progressive Students’ Union, Revolutionary Democracy, Indo-Nepal People’s Solidarity Forum, Majdoor Kishan Party, Majdoor Shakti, CPIM (New Proletarian), Communist Party of Nepal, Janpaksh, Campaign for Peace and Democracy in Manipur from New Delhi shared with the family members their pain and grief as a result of the murder.It appealed to the government of Manipur to conduct a transparent investigation into the murder, trace the culprits, arrest them and treat them according to law.The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) has also protested the killing of SDO Dr. Thingnam Kishan, his driver Aribam Rojen and staff, Yumnam Token. It said the victims had been living at a village to help in a tour undertaken by the works minister. It said they were abducted from the SDO office of the village by some armed persons and found dead at Tafou Kuki village of Senapati district.A press note signed by the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee also condemned the atrocious killing of the SDO and his two staff. The release also said that the government of Manipur would surely take action in the matter of finding the persons involved on the incident. (IFP)

Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland. The department has, on the other hand, suggested consuming the edible winged creatures by the population at large as a first towards biological pest management and getting rid of the grasshopper.“Many insects are consumed as delicacy in different parts of the world. They have rich nutrient value such as protein, fats minerals and vitamins,” stated a press release issued by Director of Agriculture. The department said the commonly edible insects include grasshoppers, crickets, grubs, caterpillar beetles, winged termites, wasps and bee larvae, ants, cicadas, stink bugs and aquatic insects.
