48-hr general strike after SDO, two co-workers found blugeoned to death

Feb 17: The state capital Imphal remained tense today after the discovery of the dead bodies of the SDO of Kasom Khullen sub-division and two of his co-workers in Senapati district.A 48-hours general strike from midnight tonight has been called by the JAC formed against the killing of the SDO, Kasom sub-division and two of his officials.The three dead bodies were found this morning around 7 am near Lukhrabi bridge between Taphou Kuki and 9th MR outpost under the Senapati police station and brought to the RIMS mortuary.The deceased were identified as Dr. Thingnam Kishan (SDO), 40, son of Th Ibopishak of Nagamapal Kangjabi Leirak Meinam Leikai, Yumnam Token Singh (Mandal of revenue department), 38, son of late Y Shamu of Chinga Mathak Yumnam Leikai and Aribam Rajen Sharma (driver of the SDO), 36, son of A Ibopishak of Uripok Khoisnam Leikai.Regarding the incident, Sapam Subhankar, convener of the JAC stated at a press meet held today at the residence of the deceased Dr. Th Kishan, that on the morning of February 13 the SDO along with four staff and his driver went for an emergency meeting called by the DC of Ukhrul.He further stated that the SDO himself had said that he was going to be in reception team for the tour of K Ranjit, works minister on February 14.Later, the family members started to search for the whereabouts of the SDO when the office staff informed the family about the absence of the SDO during the reception.Further, he added that the SDC of SDC head office at Ukhrul DC office complex told the family members that after the meeting at the office of DC Ukhrul on February 13 around 2 pm, an unidentified person abducted the six persons and took them away in the Gypsy jeep in which the officials had come.He also asked those responsible to give reasons for the inhuman and brutal killing by bludgeoning on the head with spades and stones while the hands of the deceased were tied and their eyes blindfolded.He also asked the SDC Ukhrul what they were doing while the six persons were captured. The JAC also warned that if the culprits including the other three staffs were not produced within 48 hours they would undertake a strong agitation by joining hands with the civil organisations of Manipur.The JAC also expressed that they would not take the dead bodies until the culprits were brought out before the public.Regarding the incident, roads at Uripok and Yumnam Leikai in Imphal were blocked by the locals today evening and the JAC and public of Nagamapal Kangjabi Leirak staged a rally through Uripok. Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland. The department has, on the other hand, suggested consuming the edible winged creatures by the population at large as a first towards biological pest management and getting rid of the grasshopper.“Many insects are consumed as delicacy in different parts of the world. They have rich nutrient value such as protein, fats minerals and vitamins,” stated a press release issued by Director of Agriculture.
