IMPHAL, Jun 5: The World Environment Day was observed extensively in the state by various organizations and political parties in separate ways on their own respective themes with an objective to restore a balanced ecosystem in the state.
The state level observation of the day was organized jointly by the Loktak Lake Fishermen’s Welfare Society and Loktak Development Authority at Sendra tourist spot this morning with the state chief minister O Ibobi Singh as the chief guest. The chief minister announced a clear policy of the state government to save Loktak Lake by systematic clearance of the floating bio mass (Phumdis).
Attending the World Environment Day and Loktak Water Festival occasion as chief guest the chief minister further noted that Loktak is the only fresh water lake surviving in the North Eastern region. And it has become one of the only means for many people in the state. So, it is the duty of everyone to maintain its beauty and not to destroy the lake by planting the floating Phumdis.
To make Loktak a beautiful tourist spot the state government has taken up various steps, he said. In this regard the Planning Commission has already sanctioned an amount of Rs. 2 crore to clean up the Phumdis which are floating in the lake and to make a brand new tourist spot in the area. After cleaning the Phumdis a Loktak Protection Force will also be deployed in the area to look after the lake and give guidance to the tourists as well as an ecological park will also be set up in the area.
The chief minister also further noted that Manipur is a place where a declared elected government cannot do whatever they want to bring development in the state, and it has also become a place were democracy is not preserved at all though the country is a democratic country. Due to disturbance the state government is unable to finish any development work and it has always been delayed. Therefore, he appealed to the people not to give any disturbance and instead give constructive suggestions.
Tourism minister T.N. Haokip who presided over the function also noted that Loktak would shortly be turned into a tourist spot. So, he requested all the people of the state to give cooperation to the state government which has been taking up various development works. He also appealed to the public to give cooperation to the tourists as well as give very rich hospitality since tourism has become one of the most important income sources in the entire world. He believed that if we worked jointly the tourists would surely love our place. Therefore, he appealed not to give any disturbances to the tourism sector and those who give disturbances to the sector would be announced as enemy of the state.
