Killings by miscreants continue in state

Imphal, June 5: The killing of non-local men in the state continued today also with one more non-local barber falling prey to the mischief mongers at Wabagai under Kakching police station, while another is fighting for his life at the JN hospital in Imphal. The toll in the latest spate of killings of non-Manipuris in the state has gone up to four with today’s death.

Today’s killing was carried out by unidentified armed persons in front of the barber’s hair cutting saloon near Wabagai Lamkhai under Kakching police station around 7.25 am.

The deceased was identified as Lalan Thakur, 49, son of late Gupteshore of Haridaya in Bihar’s Patna district. He was presently a resident of Kakching super market.

According to sources, the deceased had been staying at Kakching super market for the last 20 years along with his family and ran the hair cutting saloon.

The incident occurred while he was in front of his hair cutting shop around 7.25 am, and two unidentified armed youths came on a Honda Activa and shot him from close range hitting him thrice on his head and chest.

The source said the miscreants left the spot soon after and the victim died on the way to Kakching Community health centre soon after. The motive behind his killing is yet to be ascertained.

The dead body was later handed over to the family members after post mortem at the PHC morgue.

In yet another incident, a non local travelling sweets seller was admitted to the JN hospital this morning around 10.45 am with bullet injuries at his abdomen and right elbow after he was shot at by some unidentified armed miscreants around 10 am near Paorabi Pukhri Achou Mapal under Lamlai police station.

The victim identified as Lakshman Saha, 28, son of Panalal Saha of Bihar’s Baxer district, Dumbra village was presently residing at a rented house at Pandon. He was brought to the hospital in a critical condition, but his condition is improving after he was operated upon, according to the latest information. He was shot at by the armed persons while he was moving on his Luna Moped for selling sweets.

According to N Pakpi, 32, wife of Ibomcha of Paorabi village, who witnessed the scene, the victim ran towards her crying for help while she was washing clothes near the Paorabi Pukhri Achouba this morning. She suddenly heard two rounds of gunfire and along with the non-local man ran a short distance after which they discovered that he had been hit by the bullets. She herself also sustained injuries at her toe when she tripped on a stone and fell down. Both of them were immediately evacuated to the JN hospital by the local public in an autorickshaw.

In the meantime, Shantikumari, 25, the wife of the victim, disclosed that they had been staying at a rented house at Pandon for three years and the reason for the attack on her husband was not known.

Later in the day, the state government as part of preventive measures signalled a red alert in various areas of the valley district from today following the killings of non-local men by armed miscreants during the last three days in the state.

According to a highly placed official source from the state police department, a strong order has been given to all state security forces to remain alert and conduct frequent frisking to prevent kidnappings and killings of non-locals by armed miscreants.

The source further revealed that police surveillance is on at settlements of non-locals in the valley districts and they are being transported to safer places at relief camps by the state government. (IFP)
