Huge MU rally condemns prof killing; last rites performed

Imphal, May 28: Manipur University professor, Md Islamuddin’s killing by the KYKL was condemned by thousands of rallyists in a protest demonstration at the campus of Manipur University this afternoon.
The procession started from the main gate of MU organised by the JAC formed on the issue. Placards and festoons demanding the VC, Prof C Amuba and MU registrar’s resignation, and rooting out of the KYKL and its allies were carried by the protestors.
The procession was also participated by people from different communities, MU students and teachers bodies. Floral tributes were offered to the slain professor in front of the life sciences department and MUSU Home during the procession.
The main homage was paid along with floral tributes to the deceased at the Community Hall near Girls Hostel, MU.
The two youngest MLAs of Manipur K Meghachandra, Wangkhem A/c and M Prithiviraj, Moirang A/c also paid homage and gave floral tributes to the deceased.
Later, the last rites of Prof. Islamuddin was held at his birthplace, Yairipok.
During the observation, the VC, Amuba, registrar MU and other officials of the MU were absent.
In the rally placards with slogans like, “What is the reason behind the killing of the Prof by an outfit seeking quality education”, “Killing of Prof is a terrorist act”, “Killing without trial is terrorism”, “KYKL don’t try to break Manipur”, “Gunpoint cannot suppress the truth” and “It is a shame that a revolutionary group is stepping in reformation,” were displayed.
It may be mentioned that yesterday the state Cabinet meeting had approved payment of Rs. 10 lakhs to the family of Prof Islamuddin as ex-gratia and also to provide an appropriate job to one of his two sons.
Meanwhile, many students unions, clubs and other organisations have sent their condolence messages condemning the incident.
The DM Colleges Muslim Students Union has condoled and strongly condemned the incidents saying it seems like targeting the minorities.
The Maharaja Bodhachandra College Students’ Union and Birmangol College Students Union also condemned the incident. They also asked for release of arrested students unconditionally and urged the concerned authority to look into the matter of examinations under MU.
The All Manipur Recognised Private Schools’ Welfare Association, Imphal also condemned the incident and asked for release of the innocent students.
The Kangleipak Students’ Association condemned the incident and prayed for the soul of Prof Islamuddin to rest in peace.
The Yourabung Youth Club and the Itam Nungoi Juvenile Club also condemned the killing Prof Islamuddin and said that arrest of innocent students instead of arresting real culprits is not a sensible act. (IFP)

Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland. The department has, on the other hand, suggested consuming the edible winged creatures by the population at large as a first towards biological pest management and getting rid of the grasshopper.“Many insects are consumed as delicacy in different parts of the world. They have rich nutrient value such as protein, fats minerals and vitamins,” stated a press release issued by Director of Agriculture.
