DGP tells his men to maintain special vigil during festivals

IMPHAL, Oct 24: The director general of police, DGP, Manipur has given strong instructions to all concerned district SPs, COs of MR/IRB battalions including the home guards to prevent any form of unauthorised absence from their place of posting during the festivals of Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba which will be celebrated in the state next week.The instructions from the DGP have come in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the state and to prevent any unwanted incidents leading to the loss of arms and ammunition or attacks and ambushes by the militants who may take advantage of unguarded moments of the security personnel at designated posts, stations and batallions.As has been experienced in the state, during the festivals the uniformed personnel also tend to be in a festive mood resulting in many cases of unauthorised absence from the place of posting which lead to unwanted incidents of loss of arms and ammunition, he said.Anti social elements and activists of the underground organisations take advantage of such unguarded moments and attack or ambush the security personnel picking the opportune moments, he added.The DGP also said that all concerned officers and men should be suitably briefed and instructed not to leave their places of duty and to observe keenly any suspicious individuals.The police chief further instructed that all unit commanders should intensify counter insurgency operations, patrolling, frisking, checking etc. in their respective areas, and there should also be maximum deployment of forces during the festivals to instill a sense of security among the general public.Above this, senior officers have also been instructed to conduct surprise checks to ensure that there are no unauthorised absences. The SP CID (SB) has also been asked to gear up the intelligence to the district SPs by the quickest means. (IFP)

Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland. The department has, on the other hand, suggested consuming the edible winged creatures by the population at large as a first towards biological pest management and getting rid of the grasshopper.“Many insects are consumed as delicacy in different parts of the world. They have rich nutrient value such as protein, fats minerals and vitamins,” stated a press release issued by Director of Agriculture.
