Different strike but same paralysis for 2nd day running in state

IMPHAL, Aug 20: Life in the state remained paralysed for the second consecutive day today as another 12-hour nationwide general strike called by the Sponsoring Committee of Trade Unions kept people off work after the 24-hour statewide strike yesterday.The Sponsoring Committee of Trade Unions, Manipur while claiming that 65 different organizations supported the general strike, said that it was carried out successfully and peacefully in the state. They also thanked the people for their cooperation.Normal life was severely affected yesterday owing to the 24-hour general strike called by the coordination committee against the exclusion of L Monika from the Beijing Olympics. The strike concluded at 5 am today. However, another 12-hour general strike commenced from 5 am today.The 12-hour general strike of the Sponsoring Committee of Trade Unions concluded at 5 pm this evening peacefully. No violent or untoward incidents were reported during the strike hours.Even though the strike was supported by the ground staff of the Airports Authority of India, normal flight services at the Imphal airport were not affected as the Indian Airlines and Indigo flights arrived here today.Banks, insurance companies, telecom and postal services were, however, paralyzed by the general strike as employees joined the strike today.The strike also got support from vegetable vendors at the markets in Imphal, labourers and several sections of employees, said a statement of the state branch of the sponsoring committee today while lauding the people for showing solidarity to the union.Apart from employees of banks, post and telegraph, BSNL, AG office and life insurance offices, employees of the state government also did not attend work properly in the offices.It also said that in support of the strike sit-in protests were also staged.Speaking at one of the sit-in protests staged at the BT park, convener of the state branch of the sponsoring committee, L Sotinkumar called for strengthening the farmers and labour group to face the anti-people policies of the UPA government at the Centre.He also urged the people to fight the increase in prices of essential items and fuels like petrol, diesel and LPG, pension schemes for the employees, implementation of rehabiliation programmes for the working class people as well against the cutting down of subsidies given to the farmers.The Manipur branch of the Trade Union Congress joined the 12-hour nationwide general strike today with certain demands in context of the state. Among others, the state branch is demanding award of appropriate punishment to the culprits involved in the pulling out of Monika from the Beijing Olympics.They are also demanding preventing the health and education sector from becoming money earning centres and steps for the improvement of public distribution system in the state.To check kidnapping of government employees, drivers, businessmen, harassment meted out to the drivers and handymen, to check killing of migrant workers as well as kidnapping of children for soldiering and to rectify anomalies in the sixth pay commission in consultation with the employees unions are also included in the demands of the trade union.To eliminate corruption and check misappropriation of funds meant for developmental projects and schemes and punishment to those involved in the misappropriation of funds are the other demands which have drawn the attention of the government. The Sponsoring Committee of Trade Union Congress imposed the 12-hour nationwide general strike today protesting the anti-people policies of the UPA government at Centre and also to press for passing of a bill for the social security of workers in the unorganized sector, giving of security to the working class people, wiping of farmers loans from private investors by the government, enforcing of crop insurance scheme in the state, and buying of rice produced by the farmers by the government at Rs. 1000 per quintal etc. (IFP)

Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland. The department has, on the other hand, suggested consuming the edible winged creatures by the population at large as a first towards biological pest management and getting rid of the grasshopper.“Many insects are consumed as delicacy in different parts of the world. They have rich nutrient value such as protein, fats minerals and vitamins,” stated a press release issued by Director of Agriculture. The department said the commonly edible insects include grasshoppers, crickets, grubs, caterpillar beetles, winged termites, wasps and bee larvae, ants, cicadas, stink bugs and aquatic insects.
