Bandhs caused huge loss of Rs. 1319.96 crs during last three years

IMPHAL, Aug 19: The accumulated losses to the economy of the state due to bandhs and economic blockades during the period from 2004-05 to 2006-07 (i.e. three years) was estimated at Rs. 1319.96 crores, the state directorate of information and public relations stated today in a report.The economic loss due to bandhs and economic blockades on the national highways during the year 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 was Rs. 246 crores, Rs. 553.23 crores and Rs. 520.73 crores respectively while the loss in the per capita per day was Rs. 22, Rs. 24 and Rs. 27 respectively. Thus the accumulated economic loss during the last three years has been estimated at Rs. 1319.96 crores, it said.Reduction of per capita income due to bandhs and blockades was 6.10 percent in 2004-05, 11.79 percent in 2005-06 and 9.93 percent in 2006-07 upto January this year, according to data available with the state department of economics and statistics.An analysis of the Manipur government said that the number of bandhs and economic blockades was highest in Manipur compared to other states in the country, it said.People in Manipur experienced a total of 110 bandhs and 234 economic blockades in the last three consecutive years.A total of 20 days and 60 days economic blockades were called by different organizations in 2004-05, 48 days and 97 days respectively during the year 2005-06 and a total of 42 bandhs and 77 economic blockades were experienced by the people of the state in the following year, according to the compiled data.The All Naga Students’ Association, ANSAM, a Naga students’ body in Manipur and Meetei Eyek Erol Loina Shillon, a body spearheading a campaign for replacing Manipuri-Bengali scripts by indigenous Meetei scripts topped the list among the organizations which launched bandhs and blockades during the last three years in Manipur.The department has been studying the impact of bandhs on the economy of Manipur and calculated the loss per capita for each year and total loss to the economy each year.The annual growth rate of Manipur during the 10th five year plan was lowest in India, according to the data prepared by the planning commission of India which was circulated in the National Development Council meeting held last year.The growth rate projected for the state during the 11th five year plan which started April 1, 2007 is also one of the lowest as it targets 5.9 percent per annum. KYKL clarifies on killing of Prof Islamuddin

IMPHAL, May 30: The underground KYKL in a lengthy clarification on the matter of its killing Prof. Islamuddin of the Manipur University, said it understands the outrage of the public in the killing of a teacher, but is saddened by the response of Meitei Pangal organisations that the KYKL had targeted a Meitei Pangal deliberately. MOTIHARI/IMPHAL, DECEMBER 1 (AGENCIES): The mystery surrounding the whereabouts of United National Liberation Front (UNLF) chairman Rajkumar Meghen, who went missing after being reportedly caught in Bangladesh about two months ago, was over finally when he was arrested at Motihari in Bihar on Tuesday.
