Arapti thrash out death of child in school collapse

IMPHAL, April 4: Altogether 12 local organisations of Arapti Mayai Leikai in Lilong convened a public meeting today and discuss over collapse of GT Memorial Academy in which a girl student was killed.

Mention may be made a standard III student of the school namely Konsam Rosni died at the school during a heavy storm on April 1 afternoon.

During today’s meeting, principal of GT Memorial Academy, M Kirankumar disclosed that Rosni was amongst students who ran out from the class room when the heavy storm struck the school on the fateful day on April 1.

However, the girl suddenly rushed into her classroom apparently to collect her missing belongings. No sooner she moved into the class room, a Mango tree suddenly felled into the school structure and hit the girl student and killed instantly.

During today’s meeting, representatives of 12 local organisations and local public later unanimously resolved to allow the school to revive with new rigid structure so that no students could be victims of natural calamity like the April 1 incident.

The managing committee of the school, in the meantime, has declared that a new structure of the GT Memorial Academy will be constructed in coordination with parents and guardians of the students.

In the meantime, additional director (school-valley) Hareshwar Goswami personally visited the school and made a spot inquiry.

Speaking to IFP, Hareshwar said a report about the collapse of GT Memorial Academy will be furnished to the higher authority for necessary action.

The additional director (school) later visited bereaved parents of K Rosni and extended monetary support to the family.

Further speaking to IFP Hareshwar said he had experience similar situation of Rosni’s parents and guardians as one of his own children died while attending school some years back.

Structure of another school located nearby the GT Memorial Academy, Arapti Junior High School, a government run school, has also be damaged in bad shape during April 1 storm. The same school was hit by a falling Mango tree in the April 1 storm.

Hareshwar Goswami made a spot visit at the school and inspected the damages. Later, he assured to local public that every needful will be done at the earliest so as to allow the school to restart within a month. (IFP)

Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland.
