Rape attempt victim disappears from home

IMPHAL, Jun 10: The girl who was a victim of attempted rape at Lamshang Tharoijam has left her house even as the accused youth has been sent to jail by the police.Alleging that the accused youth was quietly handed over to the police who had concealed the same from the public, outraged villagers of Lamshang Tharoijam today stormed the Patsoi police station.Police lathicharged and used mob control ammunitions to disperse the villagers who were gathered at the Thaorijam club ground while discussing a follow up action.Later, the house of the accused person was ransacked.Mention may be made that on June 7 last, 24-year old Heirkrujam Budut alias Molecule, son of Chandramani of Lamshang Thaorijam Mamang Leikai, allegedly molested the 16-year old girl and attempted to rape her while she was taking bath in a pond near her house.The youth was also charged of attempted murder of the girl by submerging her in the water of the pond.While the villagers are demanding production of the alleged accused by the family, they handed over their son to the Patsoi police who registered a case under section 354/511 IPC.According to the Patsoi police, the alleged accused Budut was produced before the chief judicial magistrate today and sent to jail.On the other hand, the girl who had been starving following the violation of her modesty vanished from home without informing any of her family members, according to her elder brother M Vinodkumar.She had been on hunger strike alone and was demanding punishment for the culprit.Vinodkumar also revealed that after the incident the family of Budut requested to settle the matter with a Rs. 5 lakh compensation for violating the woman`s modesty. They further offered to take the girl as their daughter in-law.The girl was found missing from home this morning at around 7 am.Villagers later stormed the Patsoi police station alleging the police had colluded with the accused family in registering a case and taking into custody Budut.After holding talks with the representatives of the villagers and the police officer in the station, the people turned back from the police station.But instead of dispersing they marched towards the house of the culprit and dismantled the house.Afterwards, they gathered at the public ground at Lamshang Tharoijam Club and discussed the future course of action regarding the matter.While the meeting was in progress, a team of Lamshang police arrived and dispersed the villagers with a lathicharge. They also fired mob control ammunitions.

Grasshoppers a treat, not threat: Agri Dept

State Department of Agriculture has set at rest speculations of imminent famine and other dark forebodings due to current invasion of the long-horned grasshoppers (Tettigonidae family) in Nagaland. The department has, on the other hand, suggested consuming the edible winged creatures by the population at large as a first towards biological pest management and getting rid of the grasshopper.“Many insects are consumed as delicacy in different parts of the world.
